Swiss striker switches from Schalke on season-long loan

Mainz have captured the loan signing of Swiss international striker Mario Gavranovic from Bundesliga rivals Schalke until the end of the season. The 21-year-old has not featured for Schalke this season and wants to play regularly to boost his chances at international level. Mainz have paid 200,000 euros to secure his services, with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season for 1.5m euros. "I'm glad to now be here in Mainz, I really wanted this change," said the Lugano-born Gavranovic. "As regards the national team and in view of the Olympic Games in London, it is important that I play regularly. Mainz has a team that likes to attack and that suits me well."
