Schalke thump lowly Kaiserslautern; Hannover hammer Cologne

Kaiserslautern's Bundesliga future is looking increasingly gloomy after they were beaten 4-1 at home by Schalke. Meanwhile, Hannover moved back up to seventh in the Bundesliga with a stylish 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Cologne. Kaiserslautern equalled a club record of 16 games without a win with defeat at the hands of Schalke. The Red Devils made a good start at the Fritz-Walter Stadion with Rodnei putting them in front after only three minutes. Lewis Holtby and Klaas Jan Huntelaar turned the game round before the interval, though, and Raul and Jefferson Farfan gave Schalke their second 4-1 win in four days after beating FC Twente by the same scoreline in the Europa League. The win gives Schalke a 10-point advantage over fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, while they are only a point behind Borussia Monchengladbach in the chase for places in the UEFA Champions League next season. Lautern are now six points adrift of safety and the future of their coach Marco Kurz is looking bleak. At the AWD-Arena Lars Stindl put Hannover in front in the 19th minute, but Cologne levelled deservedly two minutes before the interval through Kevin Pezzoni. The game was on a knife edge and Cologne missed several excellent chances before Jan Schlaudraff put the home team in front from the penalty spot. A brace from ex-Manchester United man Mame Diouf then sealed Hannover's win to take them to within a point of sixth-placed Werder Bremen.
