The former Wigan and West Brom defender joined the German club in the summer, but has yet to kick a ball for his new side after suffering a knee injury in training in August.
The injury came just two weeks after the Austrian had signed a two-year deal with the Bundesliga side, and has left him determined to prove himself.
Hamburg have had a disastrous start to the season, losing their first four games, including defeat in the first round of the German Cup to Bundesliga 2 side Karlsruhe. And despite their form picking up in the last month Scharner insists he is ready for the fight.
He told a Hamburger Morgenpost: "I am going to be there if we slide down the league table.
"That's when you need the experienced players in the squad.
"I have already been taking responsibility off the pitch, but my injury has meant that so far it has been difficult for me to make a difference."
The 32-year-old is now hoping to pull on the Hamburg shirt on Sunday against Stuttgart after two outings in friendlies in the past week.
