German international, Kiessling, the Bundesliga's top scorer last season, is Leverkusen's only proven goal scorer and ready-made replacements are few and far between should he get injured, following Andre Schurrle's departure to Chelsea this summer.
The sale of Schurrle means that funds may be available for Hyypia to boost his options in front of goal, something which he recognised the importance of.
"We will have a problem if Stefan picks up an injury," he told German sports magazine, Kicker.
"Therefore it's important to consider if we can sign a good new striker. This is a priority.
"We definitely have strikers, like Arkadiusz Milik, in our squad. But he needs to make some progress to be in real contention for the back-up role of striker."
