New Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly identified Diouf as a top target for the winter window as he attempts to steer a course to Premier League safety.
The appeal of the 26-year-old is clear for all to see, with his strike rate in Germany making for impressive reading.
He would also require little time in which to readjust to life in England, having previously turned out in the Premier League for Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers.
Hannover, though, are set to make life difficult and are keen to block a January switch.
Diouf is only contracted to them until the end of the season, but coach Tayfun Korkut has no intention of parting with a proven marksman.
He told Deutsche Presseagentur: "If we have quality we should protect them.
"It would not be easy to fund a replacement and I do not get the impression that Mame's thoughts are somewhere else."
Hannover president Martin Kind is prepared to back his coach, despite admitting earlier in the window that he would be willing to discuss a deal for Diouf if a suitable bid was put forward.
He told Bild: "If the coach wants to keep Diouf, well, he stays."
