The two sides who would sit together at the top of the table were the season only to have started in January meet at the Frankenstadion with hosts Nurnberg keen to carry on their new year revival, regardless of who their opponents are.
"We believe we can get something from Bayern too," Nurnberg forward Daniel Ginczek told the Nurnberger Nachrichten.
"Let's see, maybe we can be the first to beat Bayern. They are only humans with two legs and they make mistakes too."
Those mistakes are rare, however, and Bayern could move 16 points clear at the summit with their 18th win in 20 Bundesliga games so far this season, should Bayer Leverkusen lose when they travel to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday night.
That would not only allow the Foals to move back into the top four, but would also give Borussia Dortmund a chance to reduce the arrears on second-place Leverkusen when they travel to Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Schalke and Hannover are also sitting pretty at the top of the 2014 table with two wins out of two, but something has to give when they meet at the Arena AufSchalke on Sunday evening.
Prior to that, two sides who have yet to win in the new year clash in Hamburg, where the struggling hosts are aiming to avoid a sixth straight defeat against Hertha Berlin, who are still reeling from defeat to Nurnberg last weekend.
By the time they take to the field, Hamburg could even be just a single point above the bottom of the table.
Eintracht Braunschweig will be aiming to reduce the deficit with a win at Eintracht Frankfurt while Freiburg will be looking to pull away from the only two teams below them when they travel to Hoffenheim for a local derby.
Finally, former Wolfsburg midfielder Koo Ja-cheol faces his former side with Mainz and Stuttgart look for their first win of the year after three straight defeats against Augsburg.
