SCHALKE missed the chance to close the gap on the leaders as they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw with basement side FC Cologne on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors needing a win to keep up their title hunt broke the deadlock five minutes before the break through Danish star Ebbe Sand.
The home side earned a precious point with Dirk Lottner levelling on the hour mark to dent Schalke's championship hopes.
The point keeps Schalke in fourth spot seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, while Cologne remain bottom of the table one point off second from bottom ST Pauli.
Werder Bremen boosted their European hopes with an amazing 4-3 win over Hansa Rostock.
Two goals in the last two minutes gave the home side all three points and deny Rostock an invaluable win.
Ailton had given Werder a dream start with the opening goal after just two minutes, but Rene Rydlewicz drew the sides level from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute.
The visitors took the lead seven minutes later with Antonio Di Salvo netting.
German international Torsten Frings got Werder back on level terms just a minute after the restart, but Rayk Schoder restored Rostock's lead three minutes later.
Rostock looked set for a shock win until two minutes from time when Frank Rost found another equaliser for Werder.
The game looked destined for a draw until Ailton popped up in stoppage time to earn Werder all three points.
