Though Poulsen is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, the 23-year-old has relished his time in Die Bundesliga.
Poulsen moved to Schalke in December 2001 in a £4 million switch from FC Copenhagen.and has established himself in the engine room.
While he admits the burden of expectation in Germany is higher, he is enjoying the delights of living in a new country.
"It is obvious that I was truly happy when I was sold to Schalke but I was also thinking about the fact that they had bought me for lots of money and were expecting to get something back for it," Poulsen told BT.
"There are truly much higher expectations compared to at FCK, where I was new and could almost just surprise.
"I really enjoy playing football. It is also exciting to live in a new country, learn a new language and there is always a new match to focus on."
But Poulsen has revealed he did have some doubts about whether he should pursue a football career during his early days with FCK.
He added: "I was thinking a lot of whether I would make the breakthrough or whether I would waste some years playing which I could have spent on getting an education.
"I don't need to have a bad conscience any more as I live intelligently and am already financially independent for the remainder of my life."
