Belgian star Sven Vermant has been told by Schalke that he can leave when the transfer window opens in January.
The former Club Brugge star has failed to live up to expectations since arriving in Die Bundesliga in July 2001.
He was signed to replace Andreas Moller, who left for Entracht Frankfurt, but he could not fill the German legend's boots.
Vermant is now looking forward to finding himself a new club.
"I am too keen to play again and don't want to spend my time sitting in the stands," said Vermant after meeting managing director Rudi Assauer.
"I don't fit into the system of our coach and that's why I take the consequences and I will leave the club."
