Schalke coach Jupp Heynckes has spoken of his delight in landing Alexander Baumjohann on a professional contract.
The German Under-17 striker impressed in the youth leagues either up front or just behind the strikers for Schalke's Under-19 team.
The fresh terms have been confirmed on the club's official website by Heynckes.
"Alexander is an outstanding talent and his development shows that the youth concept we put in place five years ago is beginning to produce results," explained the experienced coach.
Baumjohann has put pen-to-paper on a contract that starts next season and will run until 2007.
The Royal Blues will now hope that the youngster follows in the footsteps of 20-year-old Mike Hanke and 18-year-old Michael Delura, who have both made their Bundesliga breakthroughs this season, forcing highly-regarded forwards such as Ebbe Sand and Victor Agali to sit on the bench.
