Schalke had started the day one point behind the Wolves but were comfortably beaten.
Thomas Brdaric opened the scoring just prior to the interval before Bulgarian international Petrov added a second half brace to secure the win.
Schalke began the day level at the summit of the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg but suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Hertha Berlin.
