Ebbe Sand was upset to start Schalke's game with Fenerbahce on the bench.Ebbe Sand concedes he was upset to start Schalke's UEFA Champions League tie with Fenerbahce on the bench.
The experienced striker was left out of the starting line-up as coach Ralf Rangnick opted to deploy Lincoln in behind Kevin Kuranyi for the must-win game.
Kuranyi's first half header put the Germans in front but Schalke struggled to put the game to bed after Fenerbahce had two players sent off.
Danish hit-man Sand was summoned from the bench by Rangnick and responded by heading a second goal for Schalke in injury time.
But though Sand sealed the win, he was disappointed to be omitted from the starting XI, after breaking his nose in the first meeting with Fenerbahce.
"Of course it helped to come on and score," Sand told Onside.dk.
"It was a nice feeling to score the decisive goal. I am now hoping that we can beat PSV at home and therefore go through.
"I was not pleased to start the match on the bench. I didn't expect that we would start with just one striker in a match we had to win."
Sand's team-mate, and compatriot, Christian Poulsen was happy with the win but cursed PSV Eindhoven's victory over Milan.
Poulsen said: "Although the second half was a tense affair, maybe we got a bit nervous, but we got the three important points.
"That PSV beat Milan was not the best result for us. We have now got two tough matches - Milan away and PSV at home."
