Schalke midfielder Hamit Altintop will be out of action for several weeks with a new injury.
Bundesliga side Schalke have been handed a fresh blow with the news that midfielder Hamit Altintop will be out of action for several weeks.
The Turkey international strained calf muscles in training on Tuesday and now faces his third period on the sidelines this season, after only returning to action from a previous lay-off against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Schalke club doctor Thorsten Rarreck has seldom seen a player as unlucky as the 23-year-old in the treatment room.
"It's amazing how unlucky he is," Rarreck commented.
"He took part in Saturday's match and the training sessions after it without any problems.
"We will have to keep him away from training for a while and be patient in treating the problem.
"We will also use the time to subject him to a detailed examination to see if we can find the cause for these problems," he added.
The loss of the versatile Altintop will come as a blow to new Schalke boss Mirko Slomka as he attempts to keep his team on course for UEFA Champions League qualification this season.
The young Turkey midfielder will also be joined by his twin brother, Halil, in the summer.
The Kaiserslautern forward has signed a pre-contract agreement to move to the Veltins Arena when his current deal with the Red Devils expires.
