Hamit Altintop has rejected a new contract offer and will leave Schalke in the summer.
Schalke midfielder Hamit Altintop has confirmed that he has rejected a new contract offer and will leave the Royal Blues at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old revealed his plans after returning from international duty with Turkey in Georgia on Thursday.
"I've learned a lot at Schalke and have developed through the ups and downs at the club," the Gelsenkirchen-born player said. "But now I've decided to leave.
Altintop, who joined Schalke from Wattenscheid in 2003, has failed to hold down a regular first-team place under manager Mirko Slomka this season, but sport director Andreas Muller was still quick to express his regret at the player's decision.
"We wanted to keep him, as we need players of his class," Muller said.
"Unfortunately, he has decided against us, but we still wish him the best of luck in the future."
German media reports claim that Altintop already has a lucrative offer from Bayern Munich, but this has yet to be confirmed by either party.
