The bottom two both won in the Bundesliga, while leaders Schalke were held at Hannover 96.
Nando Rafael played a key part as basement outfit Borussia Monchengladbach saw off Hertha Berlin.
Christian Ziege was on the touchline and his appearance appeared to inspire the players as they were too good for Hertha.
Rafael netted a brace of goals to sandwich an effort from Christian Gimenez and the points were made safe when Michael Delura bagged a third for Gladbach in the dying minutes.
Second from bottom Bochum also secured a much-needed win, as two goals from Theofanis Gekas handed them a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
Leaders Schalke had to settle for point on their travels at Hannover. Latecomers to the AWD Arena missed the highlights as Halil Altintop fired Schalke ahead on two minutes, but they were pegged back seconds later by veteran Michael Tarnat's effort.
Leon Andreasen scored the only goal of the game on 51 minutes as Mainz got the better of fellow strugglers Arminia Bielefeld.
Alemannia Aachen are another side struggling towards the foot of the table, but they claimed a vital win at Energie Cottbus thanks to goals from Sascha Rosler and Sergio Pinto. The win was all the more meritorious as Sascha Dum was sent off on 37 minutes.
In the afternoon's other game, third placed Stuttgart were held at home by Wolfsburg.
