Marcelo Bordon bagged a hat-trick but failed to emerge on the winning side, while Werder finished a man down following Christian Schulz's late sending off.
Bordon grabbed the first of his goals within three minutes of the kick-off, but Ivan Klasnic levelled matters just nine minutes later.
Bordon restored Stuttgart's advantage shortly after, but again Klasnic fired Werder level with his second after 35 minutes.
The visitors actually went in at the break in front, thanks to Ailton. However, Bordon completed his hat-trick to bring the score to 3-3, five minutes after the restart.
Swiss international Marco Streller gave Stuttgart their third lead of the game after 69 minutes, but Ailton's second of the contest, mere seconds later, ensured the spoils would be shared.
The leaders finished the contest with ten men, when Schulz was given his marching orders after picking up his second booking with ten minutes remaining.
Elsewhere, Hamburg kept Kaiserslautern just above the relegation zone with a 3-2 success at the AOL Arena.
Christian Rahn put the home side ahead on the half hour mark, with Bernardo Romeo doubling their advantage moments after the break.
German international striker Miroslav Klose gave the visitors hope when he pulled one back, however Rahn's second of the game sealed the points.
There was still time for the Red Devils to give the home fans a nervy ending when Marian Hristov netted but it proved nothing more than a consolation.
