The league leaders stretched their advantage over nearest rivals Bayern Munich to eight points following the stalemate.
But they could not completely turn the screw on Bayern after failing to break down the stubborn resistance offered by Hannover.
The Bundesliga's bottom club Cologne were nudged a step closer to relegation after they lost 2-1 at home to Bochum.
Dariusz Wosz put the visitors ahead on the half hour mark but Cologne gave themselves hope when Lukas Podolski equalised on 54 minutes.
It has been a dire season for Cologne, though, and another nail was hammered into their coffin when Frank Fahrenhorst (pictured) netted the winner on 64 minutes.
The three points are the ideal fillip for Bochum, who are enjoying a fine campaign and are pressing for a Uefa Cup berth.
