Bremen wrap up Mertesacker move

Per Mertesacker has completed his transfer from Hannover to Werder Bremen.

German international defender Per Mertesacker has joined Werder Bremen, with Frank Fahrenhorst moving in the opposite direction.

The two clubs finally agreed details of the transfers on Tuesday, after Fahrenhorst agreed terms with Hannover - the club managed by his former coach at VfL Bochum, Peter Neururer.

No details of the fees involved for the two players have been revealed, although it is believed that Werder have paid in the region of ‚é¼5 million (£3.5 million) for Mertesacker.

"Per made it clear that he wanted to join us and so we are absolutely delighted that we were able to sort things out with Hannover," Bremen sport director Klaus Allofs commented.

"Per has gone through an amazing development in the last couple of years and we are sure that he will find just the right environment with us to continue doing so."

Mertesacker put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal at the Weserstadion, whilst Fahrenhorst has agreed a three-year deal with Hannover.

It has also been reported that the 28-year-old Fahrenhorst has received around ‚é¼500,000 (£350,000) from Bremen as compensation for the rest of his contract with the club.
