Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich kept up their pursuit of Schalke with wins in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Leaders Schalke had won 24 hours earlier, as had Stuttgart, but Bremen and Bayern responded in kind.
Miroslav Klose put Bremen ahead after 28 minutes at struggling Borussia Dortmund and Diego made it 2-0 on 39 minutes.
Dortmund were unable to muster a response in the second period and Bremen are now back to within two points of Schalke.
Reigning champions Bayern are six points adrift of the leaders after a battling 2-1 win at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
Mark van Bommel opened the scoring on the half-hour mark and Roy Makaay added a second shortly after half-time.
The Liverpool-bound Andrei Voronin brought Bayer back into the game on the hour, but Bayern held on for the three points.
