The 26-year-old, who came through the ranks at the Weserstadion, has been a regular in the side since his breakthrough in 2004 but admits he is now considering his next move.
The striker-turned-midfielder's current contract will expire in June 2014, but he is in no rush to begin negotiations on a new deal.
He told BILD: "I have my ambitions. I am 26 years old and I would like to play in European competition and maybe also in a foreign country.
"I am still happy at Werder Bremen and I have had one conversation with [general manager] Thomas Eichin.
"But I am not in a hurry and the players that arrive and leave will be a decisive factor for me," he added.
But there has been some positive news for the northern side after Eljero Elia played down reports he could leave the club.
The Dutch midfielder had been heavily linked with a move to CSKA Moscow but last week vowed to see out the three remaining years on his contract.
