The 19-year-old giant defender has been one of the revelations of the current Bundesliga campaign since breaking into the first team under new coach Ewald Lienen and Stuttgart coach Felix Magath could be willing to bring him to the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium as a replacement for the Schalke-bound Marcelo Bordon.
Bordon's future remains unclear as Schalke, who have already agreed a pre-contract with the tall stopper for 2005, would like to get their man for next season, while Magath has so far stressed that Bordon must fulfil his contract until June 2005.
As Bordon, who is set to make his debut for Brazil in midweek, has so far failed to clarify his situation, Stuttgart have started to look for possible replacements and have turned their attention to Mertesacker, but it remains to be seen if Stuttgart can really prise Hannover's biggest talent away from the AWD-Arena.
Mertesacker is tied to the 96ers until 2005, but Hannover's director of sport Ricardo Moar is believed to be in talks about extending his spell for two more years until 2007.
