Relegated Cologne have signed promising Bayern Munich defender Christian Lell on a two-year loan deal.
The 19-year-old German Under-20 international has been a lynch-pin of Bayern's successful amateur team this season and will now be handed the chance to prove himself at a higher level.
Cologne are attempting to bounce back into Die Bundesliga at the first attempt next term.
Swiss coach Marcel Koller regards the teenager as one of Germany's most promising talents even though he has had limited exposure in the Bayern first team, featuring in only four Bundesliga matches for the Bavarian giants this term.
Lell joins former Bayern colleagues Stefan Wessels and Markus Feulner at the RheinEnergie Stadion.
Meanwhile, legendary keeper Sepp Maier has backed Oliver Kahn despite the criticism coming in for the German number one this season.
"I promise that Kahn will be in top form again for Euro 2004," said the former World Cup winner.
"You can't claim that a world-class player like him is no longer the number one just because he has lost his form in the past two months.
"That's complete nonsense."
