Bayern Munich's preparations for the new Bundesliga season were dealt another blow when the German giants learned that young star Sebastian Schweinsteiger will have to undergo knee surgery this week.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder - one of the few German players who made a positive impression at Euro 2004 - has complained about pain in one of his knees since Bayern's 1-0 loss against local rivals 1860 Munich earlier this week.
Only Friday's surgery will determine how long the youngster will be sidelined.
Bayern's new coach Felix Magath will not be happy about the news as Ottmar Hitzfeld's successor is already without World Cup winner Lucio, French ace Willy Sangol and Peruvian strike duo Claudio Pizarro and Paulo Guerrero as he prepares his team for Sunday's friendly match against Manchester United.
The clash with The Red Devils takes place in the United States as part of the American tour.
