Hamburg have failed in their bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen reserve goalkeeper Tom Starke outside of the transfer window.
The Rothosen had to receive special dispensation from the German Football League (DFL) for the deal after losing Martin Pieckenhagen (pictured) to injury.
The club's number one custodian suffered a cruciate ligament injury earlier in October which could keep him out of action for eight months.
The DFL, however, announced on Friday that it saw no reason to allow Starke to follow former Leverkusen coach Klaus Toppmoller to the AOL Arena before the transfer window reopens in the winter.
Hamburg must now wait or sign a goalkeeper who is currently without a contract.
