Bayer, who surprisingly find themselves mid-table in the Bundesliga, managed to defeat Roma at BayArena in the UEFA Champions League.
The home side fell behind due to an own-goal by Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov.
"After going down to that deflected goal I really thought everything was going against us," said Augenthaler.
However, the German team were able to remain composed and ended up beating the Italian giants 3-1.
The accomplishment has taken Leverkusen to six points alongside Real Madrid and Dynamo Kiev, whilst Roma remain at the bottom of Group B after three defeats.
"Thank goodness for Jacek Krzynowek, who is scoring at will at the moment. But I'm very happy with the whole team's performance," added the Bayer coach.
"Our experienced players showed their leadership qualities today and I can only hope that this will continue."
Roma's performance was ill-disciplined, evident in the sending off of Christian Panucci and Daniele De Rossi for fouls on Krzynowek.
This behaviour prompted Augenthaler to comment on the Serie A side: "I can understand why Rudi Voller decided to pack his bags after only twenty-six days after the way they went out and kicked us today."
