Wolfsburg were stunned on their travels after struggling Mainz ruthlessly put the visitors to the sword.
Michael Thurk's second minute penalty for the home side was cancelled out less than 60 seconds later through Wolfsburg's Diego Klimowicz.
But once Benjamin Auer restored Mainz's lead on 35 minutes it was one-way traffic, with Petr Ruman scoring just before half time.
Mohamed Zidan added a fourth goal five minutes into the second half before Wolfsburg's Levian Tskitshvili was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Thurk poached his second goal of the game on 77 minutes to ensure Mainz pull further away from the relegation zone.
Hertha Berlin produced a stirring fightback in the second half to prevail 2-1 at the BayArena.
Leverkusen went ahead on 20 minutes through Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov before former Bayer ace Yildiray Basturk levelled the game on 57 minutes.
The match was decided by Marcelinho's 64th minute effort which enabled Hertha to tighten their grip on fifth spot in Die Bundesliga.
