The 24-year-old made 30 appearances in Germany's top-flight last season for Fortuna Dusseldorf, but left following their relegation to move to the BayArena on a three-year contract.
Kruse came off the bench to make a late cameo in his side's 4-2 Champions League defeat at Manchester United on Tuesday, although he acknowledges that opportunities may be limited this early into his Leverkusen career.
"It's been a massive step up. I have gone from knowing I would play every week at Fortuna Dusseldorf to being part of a big squad at Leverkusen," the Australia international told AFP.
"It's hard to get in and once you're there, you have to play well to keep your place and I have to bide my time.
"It's about being patient and being ready when the chances come."
