Lenz can see the great escape

ENERGIE COTTBUS goalkeeper Andre Lenz is confident The Lausitzer can rewrite the history books by avoiding Bundesliga relegation.

The 29-year-old custodian believes that Energie's two wins in their two league games in 2003 will provide the springboard to Bundesliga safety despite starting the year nine points behind a place above the drop zone.

"We are going to stay in the Bundesliga," Lenz told Kicker.

"No team has ever achieved the feat after being so far behind and that is an additional motivation.. We want to rewrite the history books."

Victories away to Leverkusen and at home to Bochum have taken the East German club off the foot of the table and left them only four points adrift of safety.

"We are much more compact as a team and having fun playing football again. We are letting the ball do the work and are no longer just relying on running and battling," Lenz continued.

Cottbus continue their quest for safety away to Hansa Rostock on Saturday.
