Meier is undergoing an operation this week in a Swiss hospital to remedy an ankle problem that has been plaguing him.
The 20-year-old only moved to the AOL Arena in the summer from St Pauli and this is an ill-timed setback for the promising schemer.
He is expected to be sidelined for around two months and will miss Hamburg's Uefa Cup tie with Dnipro next week.
"Alex is to undergo surgery because a nerve has to be freed and a part of the bone has to be taken away in his right ankle," said club doctor Oliver Dierk.
"For the coming six to eight weeks, he will not be available."
Meier's absence merely compounds Hamburg coach Kurt Jara's injury woes as Czech Republic defender Fukal (pictured) is sidelined until the New Year.
Fukal underwent an operation last week to repair torn meniscus in his knee and he is anticipated to miss the remainder of 2003.
The right back has endured a stop-start season after having surgery on his ankle at the end of August.
He has been provided with a special support for his knee and has been told not to put any pressure on his leg for a minimum of six weeks.
