Hamburg captain Daniel van Buyten is set to miss several weeks with an ankle injury.
The Belgium defender limped out of training with the problem on Thursday and an MRI scan revealed that he had damaged ligaments.
Van Buyten is now doubtful for the last few weeks of the season, as the Rothosen continue their battle with Schalke and Werder Bremen for the remaining UEFA Champions League places behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.
The news comes as an especially bitter blow to HSV coach Thomas Doll, who will also be without suspended centre back Khalid Boulahrouz for Saturday's trip to Schalke.
The duo are expected to be replaced by Bastian Reinhardt and Guy Daniel for the crucial clash.
