The local hero, who first rose to prominence with a sensational strike in the 1997 UEFA Champions league final against Juventus, has just nine months left on his current deal.
The midfielder's future at Westfalenstadion has looked bleak in recent times after a bust-up with coach Bert van Marwijk last year, although he has since proved to be a valuable member of the squad.
Ricken has started the Bundesliga season in impressive form after claiming a brace in Sunday's 2-1 win over Cologne, and, with Jan Koller and Tomas Rosicky expected to leave the club after the World Cup, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke is hopeful the star will extend his current deal.
"I believe that we are on the right track to agree terms on a new contract," Watzke told Kicker.
However, positive news regarding Ricken's situation has been tempered somewhat by the news that striker Delron Buckley will be sidelined for the next six weeks.
The quick forward limped off during the victory over Cologne and later examinations revealed the star has suffered torn ligaments in his left knee.
