The Borussia Dortmund forward will play no part for Germany in Brazil after damaging his ankle.
He tore ligaments during Friday's 6-1 friendly victory over Armenia.
That outing was to be his last before taking to the global stage, but he has now been reduced to a spectator role.
Reus, who is also expected to miss most of Dortmund's pre-season campaign, is trying to stay positive but admits to having been rocked by the untimely blow.
He told Dortmund's official website: "I really don't know how I'm meant to find the words to express what I'm feeling right now.
"A dream's been shattered, but I've got to look forward and go into my rehabilitation as professionally as I can, because things have to go on.
"I'll come back even stronger than I was. My best wishes now go to the team. I hope they reach our goal without me."
