The 20-year-old midfield star was forced to limp out of Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen after being caught by defender Jens Nowotny
An examination by club doctors revealed a chipped metatarsal bone which now looks likely to keep him sidelined until the summer.
The news is a massive blow to both Gladbach and Polanski, who has enjoyed rave reviews after breaking through as a first team regular at Borussia Park this season.
The combative midfielder had looked a certain selection for Germany's squad for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Portugal in May and June.
