PSV Eindhoven missed the chance to close the gap on Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord when they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Heerenveen.

Coach Phillip Cocu had wanted the kick-off put back to Sunday following a testing midweek trip to Russian side Rostov in the Champions League.

PSV were finding the going tough, and saw captain Luuk de Jong suffer a gashed head after colliding with defender Jeremiah St Juste.

Heerenveen took the lead on 72 minutes when Arber Zeneli scored flowing a swift counter-attack.

PSV, though, were quickly level when, just three minutes later, St Juste turned a deflected cross from Gaston Pereiro into his own net.

The defending Eredivisie champions could have snatched a late victory, but saw a close-range free-kick given for a backpass cleared off the line.

Cocu's side moved into second place, a point ahead of Ajax, who host Utrecht on Sunday, and four behind Feyenoord, who play at Willem II looking to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Eredivisie season.

Heerenveen, meanwhile, are in fourth place, only two points behind PSV after extending their unbeaten run to five Eredivisie matches.

Roda remained bottom after they lost 1-0 at home against NEC Nijmegen with a breakaway goal on 78 minutes from Kevin Mayi enough to secure victory.

Vitesse beat Groningen 2-1 at GelreDome, where the match had to be stopped because of a torrential downpour during the second half.

Danny Hoesen had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot after just four minutes, but midfielder Lewis Baker, on loan from Chelsea, equalised a minute before half-time with a curling free-kick.

As the heavens opened during the second half, the referee took both teams off for 15 minutes.

No sooner had play eventually resumed, Vitesse went on to claim all three points as defender Kelvin Leerdam scored from close range with 14 minutes left.

Saturday's late kick-off saw Go Ahead Eagles beat Excelsior 3-0 at De Adelaarshorst, with an early goal from Sander Duits on 11 minutes and a penalty in each half from Sam Hendriks (36, 72).

The visitors had finished the match with 10 men after forward Danilo Pantic collected a second caution on 57 minutes.
