Relegation looms large for FC Twente after they lost 3-1 at home to Feyenoord on Sunday.
Twente endured a miserable weekend as results elsewhere went against them, with Sparta Rotterdam and Roda JC both winning, and it got worse after 18 minutes at De Grolsch Veste when Jean-Paul Boetius put the visitors ahead.
Adam Maher quickly equalised after a mistake from goalkeeper Brad Jones but second-half goals from Steven Berghuis and Nicolai Jorgensen extended Twente's run without a win to 14 Eredivisie matches.
Twente remain bottom of the table and have only four games to pull back the four-point deficit on Sparta Rotterdam or they will be playing in the Eerste Divisie next season.
Feyenoord, meanwhile, moved five points clear of FC Utrecht in fourth spot after their rivals were held to a 3-3 draw against ADO Den Haag.
Zakaria Labyad's free-kick deep into injury time rescued Utrecht a point. Elson Hooi thought he had won it for the visitors when he scored in the first minute of stoppage-time at the end of the match but Den Haag were to be denied.
Earlier, Sander van de Streek's low strike gave Utrecht the half-time lead but goals from Bjorn Johnson and Tom Beugelsdijk turned the game on its head.
Gyrano Kerk headed the hosts level before the late drama and Utrecht remain fifth in the table while Den Haag are eighth and still in the running for a European play-off spot.
Ajax will go into next weekend's top-of-the-table clash with PSV Eindhoven seven points behind the league leaders after they won 1-0 at home against Heracles Almelo.
David Neres' second-half strike was enough to give Ajax a fourth-straight victory.
The points were shared in the derby of the north as it finished 1-1 between Heerenveen and Groningen at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Michel Vlap put the hosts in front just after the half-hour mark but Tom van Weert equalised with a header after 55 minutes to seal a point.
