Afonso Alves struck three minutes into added time as Heerenveen snatched a last-gasp winner against AZ Alkmaar.
The clash at the DSB Stadion looked set to end all square before Alves netted his eighth goal of the season.
NAC Breda maintained their recent good form with a goalless draw at Willem II.
The draw leaves Breda in sixth place and unbeaten in their last six league games.
Elsewhere, Martijn Meerdink scored on 56 minutes to give FC Groningen a 1-0 victory over Twente Enschede.
The win takes Groningen up to fourth while Twente slip to eighth.
Roda JC Kerkrade and Utrecht maintained their mid-table positions after a 1-1 draw.
Boldiszar Bodor opened the scoring for the home side on 27 minutes before Hans Somers equalised on 61 minutes for Utrecht.
