Rafael van der Vaart grabbed Ajax's first, but they had to be on their guard for the full 90 minutes before Mitchell Pique made sure of the points with the second in injury time.
Heerenveen had to come from a goal behind to see of AZ Alkmaar, who took a sixth minute lead through Michael Buskermolen.
Alan Jepsen levelled the scores after 36 minutes before Southampton target Marcus Allback netted the winner after an hour.
The game of the day was at De Baandert, though, where Sparta came out on top of a seven-goal thriller against Fortuna Sittard.
Dennis Gerritsen gave Fortuna the perfect start when he netted after four minutes, but Bram Marbus equalised after 22 minutes. Colin Cramb's strike ensured Fortuna went into the interval in front, but Nourdin Boukhari's penalty brought Sparta level once more.
Danny Koevermans put Sparta in front for the first time on the hour mark and former Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic star Regi Blinker made it 4-2 from the spot.
However, Cramb restored some respectability when he also netted from the spot, but it was not enough for Fortuna, who lost 4-3.
