Former Nottingham Forest star Pierre Van Hooijdonk gave Feyenoord the lead in the 25th minute only for Johnny van Beukering to equalise 60 seconds later.
Two goals from ex-Newcastle forward Jon Dahl Tomasson (38, 51) put the home side in command and even though Victor Sikora cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute, Vitesse did not have enough to tie up the game.
PSV moved back into contention following a 3-1 win over NEC Nijmegen. The result moved the Eindhoven side into fifth whilst NEC will be disappointed to have handed control of the match to their hosts.
Wilfred Bouma gave PSV the perfect start with a goal in the third minute, only for Jarda Simr to equalise ten minutes from the break.
Andre Ooijer gave the home side the lead back in the 52nd minute from the penalty spot and NEC lost their composure and had Resit Schuurman dismissed four minutes after the hour. Dennis Rommedahl finished the scoring three minutes from time.
Willem II scored both goals in their match with Roda JC but ended up with a 1-1 draw after Joris Mathijsen put through his own net on the hour to cancel out Mariano Bombarda's opening effort (52).
Den Bosch collapsed to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Twente. Kurt Van De Paar gave the visitors the lead mid-way through the first half but the home side got back into the game just after the hour through Jan Michels.
However, two goals in three minutes from Tom Van Der Leegte (68) and Sjaak Polak (71) gave Twente a well deserved win.
RKC Waalwijk ground out a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in their mid-table battle, with Yuri Cornelisse getting the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute.
