Guus Hiddink`s PSV went into Sunday`s round of games leading on goal difference, and must have fancied piling more misery on Bert van Marwijk`s Feyenoord.
The Rotterdammers showed no ill-effects from their late loss to Newcastle in the Champions League, and Shinji Ono gave them the lead on 29 minutes.
Belgian flyer Thomas Buffel struck the decisive second moments before the break.
Dennis Rommedahl gave the Philips Stadion faithful hope with a goal ten minutes after the interval, but Feyenoord held firm to record a fine win.
Ajax entertained NEC Nijmegen and the result was never in doubt after Ahmed `Mido` Hossam (pictured) fired them in front on 16 minutes.
Mido effectively settled the game with his second moments after the break, with Andy van der Meyde adding a third shortly afterwards.
Rafael van der Vaart, almost inevitably, got on the scoresheet with a 72nd minute strike and Andre Bergdolmo netted the fifth as NEC wilted.
NEC had Youssouf Hersi sent off on 77 minutes, and Nourdin Boukhari netted the sixth in injury time.
NAC Breda have lost just once this term and continued their fine run with victory at Excelsior.
The Eredivisie newcomers had no answer to NAC`s talented forwards, with Orlando Engelaar, Ali Boussaboun and Rob Penders doing the damage.
Heerenveen edged a little further away from the drop zone thanks to a fantastic 2-1 win at Vitesse Arnhem.
Vitesse are always difficult to beat at the Gelredome, but Heerenveen came away with all the points thanks to goals from Mika Vayrynen and Johan Hansma. An 83rd-minute goal from Kalle Sane ensured a tense finish but Heerenveen held on.
Roda`s fine recent run of form was ended by an organised RBC Roosendaal side, who recorded a comfortable 4-0 win. A brace of goals from Geert den Ouden and late strikes from Henk Vos and Melvin Fleur sealed the win.
Jurgen Cavens thought he had given Twente a 1-0 win, but Richard Roelofsen scored late in the game to snatch a point for Zwolle.
AZ Alkmaar were twice in front, but a last minute strike from Dirk Kuyt secured a point for Utrecht.
