Twente have European aspirations of their own and they proved much too strong for AZ in a 4-1 win.
The home side set off at a rate of knots and were rewarded when Simon Cziommer netted on 11 minutes.
AZ fashioned a response, though, with Stein Huysegems netting on 22 minutes.
Twente took control just after the half-hour mark. Giorgi Gakhokidze netted from the penalty spot and Adil Ramzi's strike just before the break broke AZ's resolve.
AZ failed to mount a revival after the interval and Cziommer netted his second just before the hour.
RBC Roosendaal and NAC Breda played out a tough 1-1 draw.
Edwin de Graaf opened the scoring for RBC on 20 minutes, but NAC pinched a point when Anouar Diba scored ten minutes after the break.
Heerenveen have struck form with a vengeance and they came from a goal down to beat NEC Nijmegen.
Youssouf Hersi had NEC in front early on, but Heerenveen battled back after the break with Daniel Berg Hestad drawing them level after the hour.
The comeback was completed when Mika Vayrynen netted with ten minutes remaining.
