It was second versus third at De Kuip, but it was the hosts who came out triumphant mainly due to Salomon Kalou's hat-trick.
Kalou and Romeo Castelen's strike made it 2-0 at half time, and Kalou's second two minutes after the break put Feyenoord well in control.
Robin Nelisse pulled a goal back for AZ but Kalou's hat-trick sealed the three points for the hosts despite a late consolation for the visitors from Michael Buskermolen.
AZ remain ten points behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven, while Feyenoord have closed the gap between themselves and AZ to seven points.
Bottom side Den Bosch enjoyed a welcome victory at fellow strugglers RBC Roosendaal despite falling behind after just four minutes to Donny de Groot's strike.
Jochen Janssen replied just two minutes later for the visitors and he proved to be Den Bosch's hero as he also grabbed the winner four minutes after the break.
NEC Nijmegen edged a 4-3 thriller at home to Groningen, with the winner coming just five minutes from the end.
Edgar Barreto and Bart van den Eede put NEC 2-0 ahead but for the visitors to blast back to go 3-2 in front thanks to goals from Hugo, Stefano Seedorf and Sander van Gessel.
Van den Eede struck his second to make it 3-3 and Andrzej Niedzielan popped up in the 85th minute to steal the points for NEC.Roda came from a goal down at home against NAC Breda to eventually take the three points with a 2-1 win.
David Mendes da Silva gave the visitors the lead just two minutes before the break.
Sergio responded five minutes after the interval and Arouna Kone popped up with a 76th minute winner for the hosts.
