AZ Alkmaar came from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw with Ajax, a result which is sure to have pleased PSV Eindhoven.
PSV beat Groningen on Saturday to go clear at the top and the two sides immediately below them could only play out a draw.
Ajax went ahead on 65 minutes through former AZ man Kenneth Perez, but they failed to hold onto the lead as Maarten Martens struck for Alkmaar with 11 minutes remaining.
Ajax deserved plenty of credit as they were forced to play for over 45 minutes with ten men after Edgar Davids had picked up two yellow cards.
There was a six-goal thriller at Zuiderpark, as ADO Den Haag and Feyenoord played out a 3-3 draw.
Visiting Feyenoord took a 19th-minute lead through Joonas Kolkka, but Rick Hoogendorp hauled the home side level before the interval.
Angelos Charisteas popped up with a second for Feyenoord just after the interval, but Hoogendorp netted his second from the penalty spot just after the hour.
The penalty lifted ADO's belief and Kristofer Weckstrom fired them ahead minutes later, but they were denied victory as Charisteas grabbed his second of the game on 73 minutes.
Bottom club ADO finished the game with ten men as Mark de Vries saw red late in the contest.
Second-half goals from Patrick Mtiliga and Anouar Diba handed NAC Breda a 2-0 win at Excelsior.
RKC Waalwijk came from a goal down to claim a 3-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem.
Danko Lazovic fired Vitesse ahead from the penalty spot, but struggling RKC drew level before the break through Jan Vertonghen.
And goals from Hans van de Haar and Tim Janssen secured the victory that lifts them five points clear of ADO.
