Maarten Martens says Louis van Gaal is the reason why he signed a new deal at Alkmaar.
Maarten Martens says coach Louis van Gaal was the main reason behind his decision to sign a new contact at AZ Alkmaar.
The Belgian midfielder put pen-to-paper recently on a new deal that ties him to DSB Stadion until 2012.
Martens has impressed since his arrival from RKC Waalwijk and coach Van Gaal believes the midfielder is crucial to AZ's future plans.
"I was surprised that the club came to me so quickly," Martens told AZ.tv.
"Van Gaal is one of the reasons I have come here. He has trust in me and that's why I'm very happy that he has extended my deal."
Meanwhile, Stijn Schaars will miss the semi-finals of the KNVB against NAC Breda due to ongoing problems with his ankle.
Schaars underwent surgery in January but boss Van Gaal says the midfielder is still suffering "stabbing pain" in his ankle.
"He will probably miss the final part of the season and he hadn't counted on that," added the AZ boss.
