The 23-year-old has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, who left Ajax for Tottenham Hotspur last week.
Both clubs agreed terms over the weekend and Duarte penned a four-year deal which is reported to be worth up to 3million euros on Monday.
"The clubs have come to an agreement, now I have to pass the medical and reach a deal on my personal terms," he told Dutch broadcaster NOS prior to the completion of the switch.
"Normally that won't be a problem with the club. I will just play my own game, so it will work out. It's a dream to make this step to Ajax."
Duarte's professional career started with Sparta before he left the Rotterdam-based side to join Heracles in the summer of 2011.
The Netherlands Under 21 international developed to play a pivotal role in Almelo, scoring 12 goals in his 65 top-flight appearances.
Louis van Gaal called the highly-rated midfielder into the Dutch squad for their Asian tour earlier this summer but he is yet to make his Oranje bow.
