Hiddink has seen number one Ronald Waterreus suffer a series of injuries this term, meaning Ten Rouwelaar has had to be exposed to top flight football at an early stage in his career.
The Philips Stadion boss has hinted that the pressure could get too great for Ten Rouwelaar, leading him to consider other options.
"To be honest, we couldn't miss Ronald Waterreus for a period of five weeks," Hiddink told Algemeen Dagblad. "The situation has really attracted my interest.
"Faults of goalkeepers could cost us a lot of points.
"Just like Arjen Robben, Ten Rouwelaar has to adapt in his first year at PSV. Robben did that, Ten Rouwelaar still has to make that step. And I don't have much patience anymore."
Wapenaar, 32, is reportedly the keeper who has caught Hiddink`s eye.
The veteran has been told his contract will not be renewed by Utrecht in the summer, and PSV would almost certainly be able to secure his services for a nominal fee.
Other teams have expressed interest in acquiring Wapenaar, but a move to PSV and the chance of lifting the league title could prove too difficult to resist.
