Sweden international Toivonen has been a key player for PSV since arriving from Malmo in 2009, but his current contract expires at the end of the season and there is a chance he could leave for free next summer.
Toivonen has spoken to club bosses and confirmed that he feels it is the right time to embark on a new challenge, preferably when the transfer window reopens in January.
The highly-rated attacker, 27, has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Newcastle United among those credited with an interest.
"It looks good, it expires in June," Toivonen told Fotbollskanalen.se.
"We have had a meeting with the club and I told them how I feel. It was an open and honest talk.
"I want to find a new club. But PSV also want that I sign and help the club.
"The dream would be to move in January, then PSV also get money."
