Robin Van Persie was both hero and villain for the Rotterdamers, scoring and being sent-off as Feyenoord battled to victory.
Van Persie put his side in front inside two minutes, but Igor Gluscevic levelled shortly afterwards.
Things got worse for Feyenoord when van Persie was given his marching orders on 23 minutes, but Bert van Marwijk`s side showed real determination and secured the points when Thomas Buffel scored with 20 minutes remaining.
Feyenoord are just a point behind Ajax but seven adrift of leaders PSV Eindhoven.
RBC Roosendaal virtually assured themselves of a place in the Eredivisie next term with a gritty 1-0 win over Twente, with Edwin de Graaf scoring the only goal of the game on 70 minutes.
RBC are now some way clear of the play-off places, and only a late charge from Vitesse Arnhem would leave them in trouble.
Groningen are still in trouble after being held to a 0-0 draw by European chasing NEC Nijmegen.
