The Kuip club have had an indifferent start to the season but it looked good on Sunday as they raced into a three-goal lead.
Anthony Lurling fired them in front on five minutes, following good work from Shinji Ono.
Dirk Kuyt put Feyenoord in cruise control with a fine goal on 35 minutes and Patrick Paauwe increased their lead shortly before the break.
Martin Drent gave Groningen some hope with a header on 53 minutes and Hugo ensured a tense finish with a goal ten minutes from time.
Feyenoord cracked under the pressure and Groningen forced an amazing draw when Sander van Gessel found the net in the dying seconds.
Utrecht put some daylight between themselves and the bottom clubs in the table with a 2-1 win over Heerenveen.
It took 53 minutes to break the deadlock, with Stefaan Tanghe firing the home side in front. Bas van den Brink made sure of the points with a goal 20 minutes from time, as Richard Knopper's effort proved no more than a consolation.
Willem II recovered from going a goal down to beat RKC Waalwijk 4-1.
Serginho Greene opened the scoring for the visitors on 26 minutes, but it only acted as a spark for Willem II who responded with two goals in five minutes.
Tom Caluwe brought Willem II level on 27 minutes and James Quinn rifled them in front from the penalty spot shortly afterwards.
RKC's afternoon got worse when Rick Hoogendorp received his marching orders on 53 minutes. Romano Denneboom put daylight between the two sides with a goal 15 minutes from time and Bart van den Eede put some gloss on the scoreline with a late fourth.
Zwolle recorded their first win of the season, but remain bottom, after Jasar Takak fired them to a 1-0 win over Twente.
