Danny Hesp was the two-goal hero for RKC, scoring on 36 and 65 minutes, with Dennis Schulp netting the second, crucial, finish shortly before the break.
Iwan Redan gave RKC hope when he made the scores 2-1 on 56 minutes, but NEC proved too strong, with Mike Zonneveld and Bart Latuheru adding goals shortly before full-time.
Both teams finished with ten men, as Schulp was given his marching orders, along with RKC`s Michael Lamey, on 48 minutes.
Feyenoord are in serious danger of being overhauled for second place, and Roda moved to within four points of the Rotterdam club thanks to a 1-0 win. Feyenoord keeper Jurzy Dudek was unfortunate enough to score an own goal as Roda defender Regilio Vrede came back off the post and deflected off the back of the highly-rated keeper's back to gift the home side all three points on 62 minutes.
The Rotterdam club can only now finish level on points with PSV if they win all of their four remaining games and Eindhoven lose theirs.
Utrecht moved themselves within a point of RKC after beating bottom club RBC Roosendaal 2-1.
Tom van Mol and Igor Gluscevic helped the visitors into a two-goal lead, and although Marcel Cas reduced the arrears on 57 minutes, Utrecht were able to hold on for victory.
