Striker Salomon Kalou will not be able to represent Holland at this summer's World Cup finals after having his request to gain Dutch citizenship rejected on appeal.
The Feyenoord player had earlier made a heartfelt plea to minister Rita Verdonk after initial attempts to gain new nationality proved unsuccessful.
Kalou had hoped to be eligible for the fast-track system which would have enabled the Ivory Coast-born star to turn out for Marco van Basten's side in Germany.
However, the request has fallen on deaf ears and Verdonk's steadfast refusal to provide a concession is bound to prove a major disappointment to Kalou.
"In the first place it's a pity for Salomon himself," said a disappointed van Basten.
"I know how much he wanted to play for the Netherlands during the World Cup."
